Plot

Born and bred in the tumultuous terrain of South Africa, Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland), a respected schoolteacher, finds solace in his wife Susan (Janet Suzman) and son Johan (Rowen Elmes). He is a man who believes firmly in the principles of justice and compassion, treating every individual with equal regard. His life takes an unexpected turn in the 1980s when the government, in a sweeping wave of brutality, arrests and tortures countless black residents, including children as young as eleven. Among the victims is Jonathan (Bekhithemba Mpofu), the son of Stanley (Zakes Mokae), Ben's loyal gardener. The boy is ruthlessly assaulted by the police, allegedly during an attempt to escape. This tragic incident shakes the core of Ben's existence, piercing the veil of ignorance that insulated him from the harsh realities of his society, built on the shaky foundations of exploitation and injustice. Summoning the courage to challenge the system, Ben decides to delve into the murky depths of this incident, determined to expose the truth and ensure that no murder goes unpunished. But the pursuit of justice is not without its perils. Unaware of the storm that lies ahead, Ben is about to be branded a "traitor" by his own kinsmen, a label that threatens to tarnish his identity and uproot his life. "A Dry White Season" paints a compelling picture of one man's struggle against the oppressive machinery, a journey that unravels the fabric of his beliefs and the society he thought he knew.
